New Macmillan Impetus Cancer Advocacy Service

Hello, this is my first blog for OPAAL, so an opportunity to introduce myself. I’m Sam Bond. I am very happy to be setting up and managing the new Macmillan Impetus Cancer Advocacy Service http://www.bh-impetus.org/projects/macmillan-impetus-cancer-advocacy/{157922c1867c465ab595f62760d2f84d0321203875866d5c77529987cd576204}20 Like many of us, I have witnessed the effects of cancer on a close relative. Having set up and managed an advocacy service in my previous role, I am passionate, about the difference our Cancer Advocacy service can make to the quality of people’s lives.

I first got involved with Brighton & Hove Impetus http://www.bh-impetus.org/ in 2005 as a volunteer. I also had the privilege of being Impetus’ first social work student. I really enjoyed the experience and fortunately they have allowed me to return in various guises over the years! As you’d expect I’ve seen quite a few changes in the organisation over this time. For a number of years now Impetus has been providing specialist independent advocacy services.

For the last few weeks I’ve been going out and about to talk to Brighton & Hove community groups and service providers about the Cancer Advocacy Service. Having worked in health and social care in Brighton & Hove for about 17 years I’m familiar with many organisations, but I’m finding it really interesting learning more about services and the roles of their workers, and how our Cancer Advocacy service can work alongside them.

In Brighton & Hove Macmillan http://www.macmillan.org.uk/ provide a number of volunteering services including an innovative service called Team Up http://goteamup.macmillan.org.uk/ which links people with volunteers who can help with small practical tasks and Brighton Buddies http://www.macmillan.org.uk/in-your-area/local-dashboard/detail/Support{157922c1867c465ab595f62760d2f84d0321203875866d5c77529987cd576204}20groups/8419/Volunteering-service–Brighton-Buddies, a befriending service.

I visited Macmillan Mobile Information and Support Service http://www.macmillan.org.uk/Aboutus/ContactUs/MobileInformationCentrelocations.aspx when they came to Brighton on a sunny day in May. Luckily it was much better weather than they’d had in Worthing the day before when they had almost got blown away. It’s amazing how much information those guys pack into that small bus! Looking forward to working with Helen on June 25th at Best of Health event, a health day organised by Brighton & Hove City Council for people with learning disabilities. I also met up the fantastic Macmillan Support Workers at The Royal Sussex County Hospital Cancer Centre.

I’ve attended some very good events recently including an event on Dying, Learning Disabilities and Dementia hosted by Martlets Hospicehttp://www.themartlets.org.uk/home/index.html l also attended a Carers’ Event hosted by the Carers Centre in Brighton. It was really useful to hear from The Carers’ Services at Brighton & Hove City Council about the changes under the Care Act that will affect people who provide unpaid care.

I’m very much looking forward to learning about the experiences of OPAAL partners in setting up and delivering Cancer Advocacy Services.
